I have great content – how do I drive traffic? (Part 1 – Social Media)

The internet is a powerful marketplace. At times, almost too powerful.

Think of how we people have made purchases for thousands of years. You decide you need or want to acquire something, and you go to your local store or stores to look at it and buy it. But this all changed with the internet.

Suddenly people from all over the world want to sell you their products. Instead of having a few, or maybe a handful, of prospective sellers, there are thousands, maybe tens or hundreds of thousands, of people all wanting your attention.

This is great if you are the buyer – you can price optimize to the nearest penny. But what about sellers? How do you get attention? Even if you have the best product at the best price, how will anyone know?

This is the great challenge of making money online – driving traffic. All those exciting videos you have watched about setting up your drop ship store, or making money with affiliate marketing, they all hinge on getting people to view your offer.

Often the first way we get exposure is through social media. We will cover how to do this in more detail in another post (and provide a step by step guide in our member’s section), but here are the basics:

1. Post good content – don’t just spam Instagram and Facebook. Take time on your posts, put good content in the comments as well. You want people to slow down and linger. The longer they spend with your post, the more likely they will check out your profile.
2. Have a link to your site in your profile.
3. Post regularly – the more often you post (good content – no spam. See #1) the more likely you will be seen by many. The more who see your posts, the more subscribers you will get, the bigger your audience… (see where this is going?)
4. Engage with others. Be selective here – being the 400th person to comment on a post isn’t going to help you a bunch. My trick – search on a relevant hashtag, and look at the most recent, not the most popular. Find some posts you like, and comment on them. Engage. Others will see your comment, and some will go to your pages. And some will subscribe…

Now – this is important – it is going to take you a while. Yes, there are people who will tell you that they can give you a thousand followers for $10. I’ve done that before. They will gradually fall off, and they won’t like or engage. These are just bots. Paying for a few thousand likes might get your post showing up in someone’s feed, and then you get noticed by real people.

That is the real issue. You want to be noticed. Social media is one way to do it. In a future post we will discuss approaches more likely to lead to conversions.
